CCII is excited to announce a new homeschool program in partnership with Forest Learning Collective! This program will run Thursdays during the school year from 9am-2pm, beginning Thursday Sept 17th. This program focuses on higher-level, unit-based curriculum that meets high school requirements for homeschoolers. Students entering grades 5-12 may participate in the program.
The program will be divided into three semesters: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
The Fall semester will focus on an immersive environmental biology program. Each week students will visit many of the special environments in Cortland and surrounds, discovering the special conditions that make unique environments function. Students will become familiar with many different tools for scientific investigation, from observation charts to ph measurement. Fall semester runs from Sept 17th until Dec 17th.
During the Winter semester, students will choose a science or engineering subject they would like to focus on, and will complete a project-based investigation of their chosen topic. They will be partnered with a mentor and have access to regional science tools and resources to complete their project, as well as having the opportunity to participate in both a local and prestigious regional science fair. During this semester we walk through the steps of: refining an idea, doing research, displaying the results, and public presentation. Winter semester runs from Thursday Jan 7th until March 25th, with optional participation in the CNYSEF fair at the beginning of April.
During the Spring semester students will be based at The Hub but once again have the opportunity to investigate outside. This semester will investigate the intersections of scientific disciplines through questions such as: how can physics explain food webs? How do principles of motion explain the way that organisms look and move? How is our gut bacteria related to soil networks? Students will be encouraged to ask questions and investigate the answers using the the tools available in our extensive science lab. Spring semester will run from April 1st until June 10th.
Beginning in the Winter semester, an additional afterschool program will be available on Thursday afternoons to participating students. This program will focus on English with the theme of Survival Stories. This reading program harnesses the power of storytelling to engage learners in the joy of narrative, even those who ‘hate to read’. Storytelling is an essential part of the human experience and binds us together as communities. We will mix in hands-on activities to bring alive events in the stories that the protagonists experience. This after-school program will run from Jan 7th until June 10th at The Hub, from 2pm until 5:15 pm. The afterschool program charges and additional fee.
Fees:
Charges for this program are on a sliding-scale basis according to family income, with scholarships available. We do not ask for proof of income but ask that you pay what you are able.
